Editorial Comment on Carter-Thomason Uterine Suspension Technique

To the Editors:
I am responding to an article on uterine suspension and position by ligament investment, fixation and truncation
(UPLIFT) (May 1999). I have performed nine UPLIFT procedures in the past year. I concur with James E. Carter, M.D.,
that it is a relatively easy, 10-minute procedure using the Carter-Thomason 2-mm needle point suture passer.
I offer this procedure to patients with uterine retroversion who have symptoms and signs of endometriosis and are
scheduled to undergo diagnostic laparoscopy. For patients who do not have endometriosis, their dysmenorrhea and
dyspareunia significantly improves with UPLIFT.
The UPLIFT procedure is a time efficient and effective procedure and can be reversed easily. I will continue to
offer it to patients with dysmenorrhea or dyspareunia who have uterine retroversion.
