The UPLIFT Procedure With The Metra PS® Procedure Kit

For uterine suspension that holdsSM

Although approximately 200 techniques for performing uterine suspension (including 12 laparoscopic methods) have been described in the medical literature, questions about the durability and efficacy of the procedure remain. The UPLIFT procedure was developed by James Carter, M.D. to address these shortcomings.

The UPLIFT procedure (Uterine Positioning by Ligament Investment, Fixation and Truncation) is an innovative laparoscopic uterine suspension technique that involves fully investing the round ligaments with permanent suture. The round ligaments are truncated and fixed, repositioning the uterus to an anatomically correct, slightly anteverted mid-line position. The Metra PS® procedure kit, contains a specially designed suture passer and other instruments to facilitate the procedure.

Clinical reports demonstrate that the UPLIFT procedure is an improvement over earlier uterine suspension techniques because of its durability. John F. Steege, M.D. states that in laparoscopic uterine suspension procedures in which the round ligament is invested with permanent suture, the strength of the suspension is dependent almost entirely on the strength of the suture itself and only minimally relies on the medial-most 1 cm of the round ligatment.1

  • Steege performed the UPLIFT procedure on approximately 40 women with only two recurrences during the first two years postoperatively. Suture removal was necessary in one additional case due to persistent discomfort at the suture site.

  • Carter performed the UPLIFT procedure on a series of 75 women and reported no suspension failures with up to two years follow-up.2

Additionally, the UPLIFT procedure can be performed quickly – average of 12 minutes with experience, and requires only minimal recovery time. The procedure may be submitted for reimbursement under existing codes.
